USS Maui, a 17,500-ton (displacement) transport, was built in 1917 at San Francisco, California, as the civilian passenger steamship Maui. The Navy acquired and commissioned her in March 1918 for trans-Atlantic service with the Cruiser and Transport Force. She took U.S. service personnel to the European War zone into November 1918, then reversed the process and brought veterans of World War I home. USS Maui was decommissioned in September 1919 and returned to her owners.
