USS Montclair (ID # 3497), 1918-1919.
Originally the civilian refrigerator ship War Speed, which was renamed Montclair in 1918

Montclair, a 4474 gross ton refrigerator ship, was built at Shooters' Island, New York, in 1918 as the British merchant ship War Speed. She was taken over by the United States Shipping Board in August 1918 and turned over to the Navy, which placed her in commission as USS Montclair (ID # 3497) for operation by the Naval Overseas Transportation Service. Her initial attempt to cross the Atlantic was cut short by machinery troubles, but she made three successful round-trip voyages to Europe between October 1918 and May 1919, followed by another abortive trip in June. USS Montclair was decommissioned in July 1919 and returned to the Shipping Board. After peacetime operations as a merchant ship, she was scrapped in 1937.

This page features the only views we have concerning USS Montclair (ID # 3497).
