USS Mariana (ID # 3944), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Mariana (American Freighter, 1915)

Mariana, a 3129 gross ton (7080 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1915. Taken over by the U.S. Navy for World War I service with the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS), on 28 July 1918 she was placed in commission at Baltimore, Maryland as USS Mariana (ID # 3944). The freighter loaded a cargo of general supplies at Baltimore and in early August joined a convoy sailing from New York to Brest, France. She delivered her cargo at Rochefort, France in late August and returned to Baltimore in September. In October Mariana carried a cargo of Army supplies to Nantes, France. Between November 1918 and January 1919 she brought two cargoes of potatoes from Belfast, Ireland to French ports to support the Army, which was in urgent need of them. Arriving at New York in February 1919, USS Mariana was decommissioned on 4 April 1919 and transferred to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owners, the New York and Puerto Rico Steamship Company. S.S. Mariana changed owners, but not her name, in 1936. While steaming from Puerto Rico to Boston, Massachusetts on 5 March 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-126, with the loss of all thirty-six men on board.
