USS Munwood (ID # 4460), 1918-1919

USS Munwood, an 8516 ton (estimated displacement) cargo ship, was built in 1914 at Greenock, Scotland, as a 3190 gross ton commercial freighter. She was chartered by the U.S. Army for World War I service in September 1917 and employed by them for more than a year. In mid-October 1918 Munwood was ordered taken over by the Navy, for operation on Army account. Commissioned later in that month, her initial Navy trip began in late November, but it was interrupted when Munwood went to the assistance of a disabled Portuguese merchantman, which she towed to Bermuda. Finally arriving in France in January 1919, she discharged her cargo and steamed back to the United States. USS Munwood was decommissioned in early March 1919 and returned to her owner, the Munson Steamship Lines of New York City.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Munwood (ID # 4460).
