USS Machias, a 1177-ton gunboat built at Bath, Maine, was commissioned in July 1893. A year in the North Atlantic was followed by a tour on the Asiatic Station that lasted until late in 1897. During the Spanish-American War, she operated off Cuba, participating in the 11 May 1898 engagement off Cardenas.
After 1898, Machias was assigned to the Caribbean and European waters, and spent several years as a Naval Militia training ship. She patrolled out of Gibraltar during World War I, and was transferred to the Pacific in 1919. Decommissioned in October 1919, the gunboat was sold a year later to Mexico. Under the name Agua Prieta, she served in that nation's navy until 1935.
