    Note:
    This photograph was originally identified as showing USS Great Northern. However, the ship's camouflage scheme is that of her sister, USS Northern Pacific. See Photo # NH 53775-A for a cropped version, emphasizing the ship.

    USS Northern Pacific
    (1917-1919)

    Seven of the ship's officers wearing life jackets, circa 1918.
    Five of those present are identified on the original print. They are (in no particular order):
    Lieutenant Commander A.W. Hunter, USNRF;
    Lieutenant Commander Leo O. Colbert, USNRF;
    Lieutenant Commander Andrew D. Denney, USN;
    Lieutenant Commander Everette G. Morsell, USN (Pay Corps) -- probably the officer in the center of the group, with white bands between his sleeve stripes; and
    Lieutenant George S. Bull, USNRF.
    Note that three of these officers are wearing canteens and one wears binoculars.

    Halftone reproduction of a photograph taken from USS Northern Pacific as both ships were steaming through heavy seas en route to France during September 1918.
    This image was published in 1919 by the National Specialties Company of New York City, as one of ten photographs in a "Souvenir Folder" of views concerning USS Leviathan.
