USS O-4 (Submarine # 65, later SS-65), 1918-1946

USS O-4, a 521-ton O-1 class submarine, was built at Quincy, Massachusetts. After commissioning in late May 1918 she operated on anti-submarine patrols along the U.S. Atlantic coast until early November. On 24 July 1918, while so engaged, she was mistaken for an enemy U-boat and fired on by a British ship, fortunately without receiving serious damage. Early in November O-4 began a voyage to the European War zone. However, the 11 November 1918 Armistice brought World War I to an effective end before she arrived, and O-4 returned to the United States.

During the next dozen years O-4 was mainly employed as a training submarine, based at Groton, Connecticut. She also made a brief deployment to the Panama Canal Zone. Decommissioned in June 1931, she was laid up for nearly a decade before the World War II crisis brought her back into commissioned service in late January 1941. O-4 spent the entire war on training duty at the New London Submarine School (actually located at nearby Groton). She was decommissioned for the last time in September 1945 and scrapped in February 1946.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS O-4 (Submarine # 65, later SS-65).
