USS Pascagoula (1918-1918)

Pascagoula, a 2551 gross ton wooden-hulled freighter, was built at Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1918 to the Emergency Fleet Corporation's Design 1001, one of over two hundred such ships ordered under the U. S. Shipping Board's World War I emergency shipbuilding program. Upon completion she was sent to New Orleans to fit out for Navy service and was commissioned there on 4 October 1918. USS Pascagoula (which was not assigned a registry ID number) was then ordered to Norfolk to load cargo, but was forced to put in at Key West on 13 October for repairs to her steering gear. Resuming her voyage the next day, she arrived in Hampton Roads on 21 October and was sent to the Norfolk Navy Yard for further repairs. World War I's combat phase ended soon thereafter, and the Navy decided to put her on the list of ships to be demobilized. She was decommissioned on 21 December 1918 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. Pascagoula was one of 226 surplus wooden ships sold for scrapping in a huge single sale in 1922.
