Patrol # 8 was a 70.65-foot motor boat built at South Boston, Massachusetts, in 1916. She was leased by the Navy and commissioned as USS Patrol # 8 (SP-56) in May 1917. The craft was employed on patrol duties in southern New England waters for the rest of World War I and was returned to her owner in February 1919.
This page features all the views we have related to USS Patrol # 8 (SP-56) and the civilian motor boat Patrol # 8.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical
Center holds one other view of the motor boat Patrol # 8,
probably taken prior to her World War I Navy service. She is
seen from off her port bow, underway, with a large numeral "8"
on her stack. That number may indicate that the photo was taken
while she was still in civilian hands, serving as part of the
pre-World War I "Preparedness" movement. |
