Originally the civilian motor boat Patrol # 4 (1915)

Patrol # 4 was a 40-foot motor boat built at West Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1915. She was leased by the Navy and commissioned as USS Patrol # 4 (SP-8) in April 1917. For the rest of World War I she was employed on patrol duties, based at Newport, Rhode Island, and was returned to her owner in March 1919.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other view that may be the motor boat Patrol # 4, probably taken prior to her World War I Navy service. She is seen from off her port broadside, underway in a harbor, with the numeral "3" on her stack. However, that number may indicate that the photo actually shows her sister craft, Patrol # 3, which was not taken over by the Navy.
This photograph is mounted on the "SP" data card for Patrol # 4 (SP-8).
