USS Pike (Submarine # 6, later SS-6), 1903-1922.
Later renamed A-5

USS Pike was a 107-ton Plunger (later A-1) class submarine, built at San Francisco, California, and commissioned in late May 1903. Following three years of operations out of the Mare Island Navy Yard she was out of commission there between November 1906 and June 1908. She then served along the Pacific coast for four years. Pike was renamed A-5 in November 1911 and, in June 1912 was again placed in reserve, this time at the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

During February and March 1915 the collier Hector transported A-5 to the Philippines. She was recommissioned there in April 1915 and began active service in Philippine coastal waters. Accidently sunk at the Cavite Navy Yard in April 1917, A-5 was raised and reconditioned in time to perform patrols off Manila Bay during the rest of World War I. She remained active after the conflict's end and was designated SS-6 when the Navy formally adopted the hull number system in July 1920. USS A-5 was decommissioned a year later and was subsequently used as a target. She was stricken from the Navy list in January 1922.

This page features all the views we have related to USS Pike (Submarine # 6), which was renamed A-5 in 1911.
