S.S. Rescue, a 537 gross ton salvage ship, was built at Tottenville, New York, in 1899 for employment as a commercial salvage ship. She was acquired by the Navy in September 1918 and placed in commission at that time as USS Rescue (ID # 3209). After eight months' service with the Fifth Naval District, the ship was decommissioned in mid-May 1919 and sold back to her former owners, the Merritt & Chapman Wrecking Company of Norfolk, Virginia.
This page features the only views we have concerning USS Rescue (ID # 3209) and the civilian salvage ship Rescue of 1899.
