USS Ranger (SP-237), 1917-1931.
Renamed SP-237 in 1918.
Originally the civilian steam yacht Ranger, built in 1910

Ranger, a 219 gross ton steam yacht, was built in 1910 by Robert Jacobs, of City Island, New York. She was purchased by the Navy from T.W. Slocum of New York City in June 1917 and placed in commission in October of that year as USS Ranger (SP-237). Renamed SP-237 in 1918, she was employed on patrol duties in the New York City area until several months after the November 1918 Armistice. She was decommissioned in late April 1919 and transferred to the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, who operated her until November 1930, when she was returned to the Navy. SP-237 was stricken from the List of Naval Vessels in September and sold in December 1931. Her transfer to Panamanian registry was approved by the Secretary of the Navy in May 1932.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Ranger (SP-237), USS SP-237 and the steam yacht Ranger of 1910.

USS SP-237 (formerly USS Ranger) is seen in the background of the following photograph of another ship:

Photo #: NH 55386

Steamship Coronado

"One of the hundreds of cargo ships that carried an armed guard, usually with a Chief Petty Officer in command, during the First World War." (quoted from the original World War I era caption.)
This may be the freighter Coronado completed by Moore and Scott Iron Works of Oakland, California, early in 1918. However, though this ship generally resembles that seen in a January 1918 photo of the Oakland-built Coronado, there are significant differences, among them the built-up midships hull side seen here.
The ship passing by in the right background is USS SP-237 (formerly named Ranger). Location is probably in the vicinity of New York City. The view may have been taken in late 1918 or early 1919, as the ship's gun platforms are empty.
