USS Sterett (Destroyer # 27, later DD-27), 1910-1935

USS Sterett, a 742-ton Paulding class destroyer built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was placed in commission in mid-December 1910. For her first six years of active service, she mainly operated along the U.S. East Coast, in the Caribbean area and in the Gulf of Mexico. In mid-1916 she supported the intervention in the Dominican Republic and in early 1917 steamed up the Mississippi River to Vicksburg.

From June 1917 until shortly after November 1918, Sterett was based at Queenstown, Ireland. From there she escorted convoys and participated in anti-submarine patrols. She had a close encounter with a German U-boat at the end of May 1918, damaging the enemy vessel and making an unsuccessful attempt to destroy it. After the conclusion of the First World War, Sterett briefly served in U.S. waters. Decommissioned in December 1919, she was laid up at the Philadelphia Navy Yard until March 1935, when she was stricken from the Navy list. She was sold for scrapping in late June of that year.

This page features, and provides links to, all the views we have concerning USS Sterett (Destroyer # 27, later DD-27).
