USS Sagua, a 3299 gross ton store ship, was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in 1914 as a commercial freighter. She was chartered by the Navy in August 1918 and placed in commission within a few days. Prior to the November 1918 Armistice that ended World War I fighting, Sagua made two voyages carrying beef and other cargo to France. She made three more trips to Europe between December 1918 and April 1919. Decommissioned in May 1919, USS Sagua was turned over to the War Department to be returned to her owner.
