USS Santa Rosa (ID # 2169), 1919-1919

USS Santa Rosa, a 13,500-ton (displacement) troop transport, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1917 as the 6415 gross ton freighter of the same name. During and for some months after World War I, she was employed by the U.S. Army to carry military personnel and cargo to the European combat zone. In March 1919 she was turned over to the Navy, placed in commission as USS Santa Rosa (ID # 2169), and used to transport American service personnel home.

This duty ended in September 1919 and, in late October of that year, Santa Rose was returned to her owner, W.R. Grace & Company of New York. After some years of Grace Line commercial service, she became part of the American Hawaiian Steamship Company's fleet, and was renamed Oregonian. She was sunk by German torpedo planes on 13 September 1942, while en route to Archangel, Russia, with Convoy PQ-18.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Santa Rosa (ID # 2169).
