USS Shadow III (SP-102), 1917-1921.
Originally the Civilian Motor Boat Shadow III

Shadow III, a 50-foot motor boat, was built in 1916 at Miami Beach, Florida, for use as a pleasure craft. She was purchased by the Navy in June 1917, converted to a patrol boat and placed in commission in early September 1917 as Shadow III (SP-102). For the rest of World War I and the first months of the postwar era, she operated as an aircraft crash boat at Naval Air Station Miami, Florida. Decommissioned in January 1919, Shadow III was later transferred to the Marine Corps Base at Parris Island, South Carolina. She was ordered to be surveyed for sale in December 1919 and sold in May 1920, but was reposessed several months later and resold in August 1921.

This page features all the views we have related to USS Shadow III (SP-102).

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other photo of the motor boat Shadow III, taken prior to her Navy service, probably in the vicinity of Miami Beach, Florida.
This image was taken from off Shadow III's starboard side, somewhat toward the bow, while she was underway on a bright, sunny day. Her hull is painted white, with dark upperworks, and she carries the numeral "9" on her bow. The boat does not have the enclosed center cabin seen in the views presented above.
The original print is mounted on the "SP" data card for Shadow III (SP-102).
