USS Sappho (SP-1427), 1918-1919.
Originally the civilian ferry steamer Sappho.

USS Sappho, a 275 gross ton ferry steamer, was built in 1886 at Bath, Maine, for commercial employment. She was taken over by the Navy in August 1918 and placed in commission later in that month to provide transportation services between the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, and other locations in New Jersey and New York. Though damaged in a collision a few days after commissioning, Sappho was repaired and returned to service in October 1918. No longer required after the first few months of post-World War I force reductions, she was decommissioned in February 1919 and returned to her owner.

This page features all the views we have related to USS Sappho (SP-1427) and the civilian steamer Sappho.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other view of the steamer Sappho, taken prior to her Naval service.
This photograph was taken from off the vessel's port side, while she was tied up near shore with no evidence of activity on board.
The original print, which is cropped off at the end of her upper deckhouse, is mounted on the "SP" data card for Sappho (SP-1427).
