Sunbeam III, a 52-foot motor pleasure boat, was built in 1917 at Morris Heights, New York. Leased by the Navy in June 1917, she was soon placed in commission as USS Sunbeam III (SP-251). After World War I service protecting anti-submarine nets in the vicinity of New York Harbor, the craft was returned to her owner in December 1918.
