USS Shad (SP-551), 1917-1919.
Previously Civilian Motor Boat Shad (1907)

Shad, a 43-foot motor pleasure boat built in 1907 at Neponset, Massachusetts, was purchased by the Navy in May 1917. Placed in commission later in that month as USS Shad (SP-551), she served on patrol duties in Boston Harbor for the rest of World War I and during the first months of the post-war era. Shad was stricken from the Navy list in August 1919 and sold in September of that year.

This page features the only views we have of USS Shad (SP-551).

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other photo of the motor boat Shad, taken on 4 May 1917 at the same place as the view presented above, presumably while she was being prepared for Navy service.
This image was taken virtually the same angle as the above photograph, but has Sailors standing on the boat's afterdeck and men walking by in the foreground. Shad has the number "10" on her bow.
The original print is mounted on the "SP" data card for Shad (SP-551).
