Originally a Civilian Motor Boat, named Tyche and Shur

USS Shur, a 78' 8" patrol boat, was built in 1906 at Boston, Massachusetts, for use as a pleasure craft. Originally named Tyche, her named had been changed to Shur by the time the Navy acquired her in June 1917. Placed in commission later in that month, the craft operated in the eastern New England area for the duration of World War I. She was decommissioned in mid-January 1919, stricken from the Navy list in September and sold in December 1919.

This page features the only views we have of USS Shur (SP-782) and the civilian motor boat Shur

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical Center holds one other photograph of the motor boat Shur, taken prior to her World War I Navy service. She is seen from off the port side, rather toward the stern and from an elevation that looks somewhat down on her superstructure. She is in port and appears to be in winter layup.
This print is mounted on the "SP" data card for USS Shur (SP-782).
