The 70-foot motor boat Columbine was built in 1907 at City Island, New York, as a pleasure craft. Later renamed San Toy II, she was acquired by the Navy in November 1917 and placed in service as USS San Toy II (SP-996). She served for the rest of World War I in the New York Harbor area, initially as a tender to the New York Navy Yard's Receiving Ship, and later as a personnel ferry running between the Navy Yard and Ellis Island. With the need for such craft greatly reduced after the November 1918 Armistice, San Toy II was returned to her owner in February 1919. She remained on yacht registers into the 1930s.
