USS S-2 (Submarine # 106, later SS-106), 1920-1931

USS S-2, a 800-ton submarine designed and built by the Lake Torpedo Boat Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, was commissioned in May 1920. In 1921 she was modified with an enlarged above-water bow superstructure to improve seakeeping and, between July and December of that year, made a long voyage to the Philippines by way of the Panama Canal, Hawaii and Guam. S-2 served actively with the Asiatic Fleet until November 1924, then was in reduced commission until May 1928. Following nearly a year of further active service in Far Eastern waters, the submarine left the Philippines in late April 1929. She arrived at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, more than three months later and was decommissioned in November 1929. USS S-2 was stricken from the list of Naval vessels in February 1931 and later scrapped.
