USS S-3 (Submarine # 107, later SS-107), 1919-1937

USS S-3, first of the eleven Navy-designed 876-ton S-3 class submarines, was built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, located in Kittery, Maine. She was commissioned in late January 1919, the first completed of more than fifty World War I era "S-Boats". S-3 operated in East Coast waters and in the Caribbean area until mid-1921, when she left for the Pacific. Following a brief stay at Pearl Harbor, she was based on the West Coast from November 1921 until July 1923, then returned to the Atlantic. The submarine spent the next four years on experimental duties, while attached to the Submarine School at Groton, Connecticut. From mid-1927 until early 1931 S-3 was employed as a unit of Submarine Division Four, mainly operating in the New England area but also deploying three times to the Panama Canal Zone. She was decommissioned in March 1931 and laid up at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania. USS S-3 was stricken from the list of Naval vessels in January 1937 and scrapped.
