On Christmas Day of 1919 (if the inscriptions on the original prints have any credibility), a Portsmouth Navy Yard photographer took time out from his busy holiday to go on board the then brand-new submarine S-4, producing a remarkable series of views of her interior. This provides a fine record of the internal outfitting and decor of Navy-designed "S" type submarines (the S-3 class). Though S-4 had been somewhat altered by the time of her accidental sinking nearly eight years later, these photographs generally reflect her interior arrangement at that time. They also represent the internal appearance of USS S-5 (SS-110) at the time of her loss on 1 September 1920.
This page features all the 1919 views we have of showing
the interior of USS S-4 (Submarine # 109) from her torpedo
room through her control room, and provides links to interior
views taken further aft.
The photographs on this, and the page linked
from it, provide a visual interior tour of the submarine from
bow to stern, and are presented in that order.
To place these photographs in
context, see the general arrangement drawing for USS S-4
presented in Photo
# NH 41859.
