USS S-6 (Submarine # 111, later SS-111), 1920-1937

USS S-6, an 876-ton S-3 class submarines built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, was commissioned in mid-May 1919. Later in the year she departed the East Coast as part of a group of "S-boats" that had been ordered to the Philippines, the first U.S. Navy submarines to go to the Far East without being carried by other ships. Voyaging by way of the Panama Canal and Hawaii, S-6 and her companions arrived in Manila Bay in December 1921. She remained with the Asiatic Fleet until late October 1924, then returned to the U.S. West Coast, where she operated into February 1927.

In the spring of 1927 S-6 made a second Panama Canal transit, this time bound for the Caribbean and the Atlantic, her operating areas for the remainder of her active career. After the accidental sinking of her sister submarine, USS S-4, in December 1927, S-6 was used to familiarize salvage divers. She was placed out of commission in April 1931 and laid up at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Stricken from the list of Naval vessels in January 1937, USS S-6 was subsequently scrapped.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS S-6 (Submarine # 111, later SS-111).
