USS S-13 (SS-118), 1923-1945

USS S-13, a 876-ton S-3 class submarine built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, was commissioned in July 1923. She generally served in the Panama area for the rest of her career, but made a cruise to California and Hawaii in late 1924 and the first half of 1925 and occasionally operated elsewhere in the Caribbean region and along the U.S. Atlantic Coast. S-13 was out of commission at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, between the end of September 1936 and late October 1940. She then returned to Panama and Caribbean waters, remaining on duty there for all but the last months of World War II. The submarine left Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone, early in 1945 and went to Philadelphia, where she was decommissioned in April. USS S-13 was stricken from the Navy list a month later and sold for scrapping in October 1945.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS S-13 (SS-118).

V-4 (later renamed Argonaut) is on the nearer way and appears to be nearly ready for her launching, which took place on 10 November 1927. V-5 (later renamed Narwhal) is in a much earlier stage of construction, having been laid down on 10 May 1927.
