USS Troilus, a 7000-ton (displacement) Artemis class attack cargo ship, was built at Providence, Rhode Island, under a U.S. Maritime Commission contract. She was acquired by the Navy upon completion in June 1945 and placed in commission at that time. The ship went to the Pacific a month later and was participating in amphibious training in Hawaiian waters when the Second World War's fighting ended in mid-August 1945. Troilus carried equipment and supplies to Japan in September, then voyaged between the Philippines and Japan in support of occupation activities. In November she transported hundreds of war veterans from Okinawa to San Francisco as part of Operation "Magic Carpet". Following a January 1946 voyage from Hawaii to San Pedro, California, with more passengers, she carried landing craft to the East Coast. USS Troilus was decommissioned in June 1946 and returned to the Maritime Commission. She was laid up in that agency's reserve fleet for the next two decades and was sold for scrapping in April 1967.
