    USS Utah
    (Battleship # 31)

Crew members atop the ship's # 5 (aftermost) twelve-inch gun turret, circa 1918. Annotations on the image identify (from left to right): turret pointer's periscope, fore and main tops on masts (with identities reversed -- the main mast is the nearer), radio aerials and supporting tripod, and speed cones.
Note the triangular baffles mounted on the masts. These were a measure to confuse coincidence rangefinders, which contemporary intelligence erroneously believed were the type used by the German navy.
See Photo # NH 105768-A for a reproduction of the original card's reverse, with a message concerning this anti-rangefinding measure.
