USS Vigil (YAGR-12, later AGR-12), 1957-1965

USS Vigil, a 10,760-ton (full load displacement) Guardian class ocean radar station ship, was built in 1944-1945 at Panama City, Florida, as the 7176 gross ton liberty ship Raymond Van Brogan. For the rest of World War II she was operated in the Pacific by A.J. Bull & Company, under contract with the War Shipping Administration. The ship was laid up at Mobile Bay, Alabama, in October 1945 and remained there until 1956, except for brief service with the Waterman Steamship Company in March-September 1947.

The Navy took custody of S.S. Raymond Van Brogan in June 1956 and, two months later, renamed her Protector (YAGR-12). Following conversion to a radar picket ship, she was placed in commission in March 1957. Her designation was changed to AGR-12 in September 1958. Vigil served in the North Atlantic as part of the seaward extension of the Nation's air defenses until 1965. Early in March of that year she was decommissioned and laid up in the Maritime Administration's Hudson River (New York) reserve fleet. The ship was sold to a Spanish company for scrapping in November 1970.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Vigil (YAGR-12, later AGR-12).
