USS Waukesha (AKA-84), 1944-1946

USS Waukesha, a 13,910-ton Tolland class attack cargo ship, was built at Wilmington, North Carolina. Acquired by the Navy in September 1944, prior to completion, she was converted to an attack cargo ship at New York City. She went to the Pacific in April 1945 and carried cargo to Okinawa. Beginning in August 1945, Waukesha supported the occupation of Japan. Returning the the U.S. West Coast in November, she carried cargo to China during early 1946 and then went to the Atlantic. Decommissioned in July 1946, she was transferred to the Maritime Commission. Entering commercial service in 1947, she was renamed Mary Luckenbach, retaining that name until 1959, when she became the SS Bayou State. The ship was disposed of in about 1970.

This page features our only view related to USS Waukesha and provides information on other photographs that may be available from the National Archives.

Surrender of Japan, 1945

Marines of the 4th Regiment, 6th Division, come ashore at Yokosuka during initial landings in the Tokyo Bay area, 30 August 1945. They are in full battle gear in preparation for any treachery from the Japanese.
Their LCVP is from USS Waukesha (AKA-84), and they appear to be pulling a 75mm pack howitzer.
In the distance are the Japanese battleship Nagato (in the center) and Yokosuka dockyard facilities (at right).
