USS Wyoming (Monitor # 10) --
Construction and Miscellaneous Views

Built by the Union Iron Works at San Francisco, California, USS Wyoming was the only one of her four-ship class to be constructed on the West Coast. Her keel was laid on 11 April 1899 and she was launched on 8 September 1900, sponsored by Miss Hattie Warren, daughter of a U.S. Senator from the state of Wyoming. Following outfitting and trials she was placed in commission at the Mare Island Navy Yard on 8 December 1902.

    Under construction on Slip Number 3 at the Union Iron Works, San Francisco, California, 30 June 1900.
    The sign at left identifies the other ships built on this slip, including the U.S. cruisers Charleston, San Francisco and Olympia; U.S. monitors Monterey and Wyoming; U.S. "Gunboat No. 14" (USS Wheeling); Japanese cruiser Chitose; and the S.S. St. Paul. The adjacent Slip Number 4 was used to build the U.S. battleship Ohio.

    "U.S. Monitors Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida and Wyoming"


    Pen and ink side elevation and plan view, by the Bureau of Construction and Repair. These monitors (numbers 7-10, respectively) were built under the 1898 ship construction program.
    Connecticut (Monitor # 8) was renamed Nevada in January 1901, after launching but more than two years before completion.
