USS Western Light (ID # 3300), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Western Light (American Freighter, 1918).

Western Light, a 5869 gross ton (12,185 tons displacement) freighter, was completed at Portland, Oregon, in July 1918. She was commissioned in the Navy in that month as USS Western Light (ID # 3300). The new ship proceeded to Arica, Peru, loaded a full cargo of nitrates, and then sailed in mid-September for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, via the Panama Canal. The freighter loaded Army supplies at Philadelphia in October and left New York in early November in a convoy bound for Verdun, France. Back at New York in December, Western Light loaded a cargo of flour and lard and sailed for Falmouth, England, in January. The ship returned to New York in March and sailed on 30 March for Rotterdam, The Netherlands, with a cargo of hay, flour, and oats. Arriving at Rotterdam on 13 April, she discharged this cargo, loaded ballast and departed on 27 April for New York. USS Western Light was decommissioned in May 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board, in whose hands she remained until scrapped in Great Britain in 1938.

This page features the only views we have concerning S.S. Western Light and USS Western Light (ID # 3300).
