W.L. Messick, a 237 gross ton "Menhaden Fisherman" type fishing vessel built at Norfolk, Virginia in 1911, was purchased by the Navy in April 1917. Placed in commission at that time as USS W.L. Messick (SP-322), she was employed as a minesweeper in the waters near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay during World War I. She remained in service for several months after the 11 November 1918 Armistice and was sold in late August 1919.
This page features the only view we have concerning USS W.L. Messick (SP-322) and the fishing vessel W.L. Messick.
