USS Zirkel (ID # 3407), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Zirkel (American Freighter, 1918)

Zirkel, a 6163 gross ton (12,700 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Oakland, California. Completed in September 1918, she was turned over to the Navy and commissioned in the Navy on the 25th of that month as USS Zirkel (ID # 3407). Following trials the ship loaded a cargo of nitrates, which she delivered at New Orleans in January 1919. There Zirkel took aboard a U.S. Shipping Board cargo of cotton, coffee, and steel, which she delivered at Liverpool, England, in February. The freighter returned to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in March 1919 with a load of iron ore. USS Zirkel was decommissioned there on 3 April 1919 and returned to the Shipping Board, in whose custody she remained until scrapped at Baltimore in 1929.

This page features the only views we have concerning S.S. Zirkel and USS Zirkel (ID # 3407).
