-- U.S. NAVY SHIP TYPES --

WORLD WAR I ERA TRANSPORTS --
U.S. Navy Combat Warships employed as Transports

Following the November 1918 Armistice, the U.S. Navy converted fifteen older battleships, eight armored cruisers and two larger protected cruisers for temporary service as transports. All began this work between mid-December 1918 and late February 1919. These ships made one to six trans-Atlantic round-trips each, bringing home a total of more than 145,000 passengers. The last of these warship trooping voyages ended in late July 1919.

Source note: Tonnage (displacement) and dimension data used on this page is taken from the 1 October 1919 edition of Ships' Data -- U.S. Naval Vessels.

This page features a table (with links to individual ships) of U.S. Navy battleships, armored cruisers and protected cruisers used as transports, plus a photograph of each ship.
