[compost_tea] fungi in the winter

Recently Dr. E. talked about how fungi are active during the winter, even
under a layer of snow. This got me to thinking about fungi and dormant
plants.

Is it fair to say that during the winter, fungi provide food to the roots
of dormant plants to keep them alive while dormant?

What else do fungi do during the winter when many of the other beneficial
soil critters are napping?

Thanks,
Paulette
