Yes, total bacteria is done by direct microscopy, but you need epi-fluorescent stains to be able to differentiate bacteria from clay colloids.

The bright field scope can give you general ideas about critters in soil, compost and tea. Probably easiest for tea. We'll be putting out a handbook later this year on how to do this. Probably will sell a kit, and the instruction manual, with pictures. Sonia, at the Australia lab, is putting this manual together. She's working on all the pictures now, after having worked out a simple method that will be easy for beginners to work with.

However, as Ted has alluded to, the methods are best for looking at "few bacteria" to start with, and an "increase" later on. Not methods that are highly quantitative, really, but they are useful for being able to say - darn, nothing happened in the brewing cycle. What went wrong....

So, if interested, I can put you in contact with Sonia in OZ if you'd like to chat or talk about the methods.....
