Hey, I know something about this too... Bob's right Ted. Ver-ry unlikely
you're gonna find a 5cfm air pump for US$45 (even used, unless broken;).
Would that you could get a 1cfm pump for that, or new at $75-100? A $45
aquarium pump is unlikely to produce even .5cfm under pressure. In five
gallon buckets, one can be made to work ok, though, I've been convinced.
Better to have a bigger pump, or several little ones, but little guys can do
small quantities -- if you're careful with nutrients, as Ted and Bob and the
universe have said.
Two cups of sugar in 4 gallons of tea sounds like too much to me, Ted, and
there are major differences between refined sugar and molasses. But it's
interesting you suggest 6-8 hours, too. That sounds like a strongly
bacterial tea to me, run up and put out with a bunch of carbs for plants and
soil. Not much fungi or protos with average compost? Have you tried this
and seen what it does as a foliar spray? Are you dumping 2 cups of sugar in
at start? Half compost half sugar doesn't sound right unless you're making
a sugar tea.
On Newton thing, I believe making tea has most to do with first thermo law,
actually, second law with using teas... First law involves physical mass
(microbes major) and energy tranformations as I recall, second with
natural diffusion of same. In any event, I don't get how making compost tea
is controlled by 2nd law. I do get how using it is a marvelous thing
reflecting second law, but making it seems different. It seems to me we're
working well on both with compost tea, especially when composting is
included.
