Actinobacteria (used to be called actinomycetes) are truly bacteria. 

But they are unique, in that they grow in strand forms, and so brnach like fungi.  But they fall apart quite easily when disturbed.  They are very slender hyphae as well - only 1 to 1.5 micrometers in diameter.  So you can tell them pretty easily in a microscope.  The slender, slender "hyphae" are the actinos. 

Your son sounds like a gem.  He's going to be great at passing this information on to the next generation.  Good job Ted!
