if you have 1 unit (grm, kilo, tonne) of bacterial biomass and 1 unit of fun=
gal biomass this is a balanced system
if you have 100 units of bacterial biomass and 100 units of fungal biomass =
you have a balanced system.(with a lot more happening)
if you had a grassland system with 'x' units of bacterial biomass and 'x' u=
nits of fungal biomass
then the old forest system may have 'x (x100)bacterial biomass and 'x'(x100=
000) fungal biomass.
this gives the forest 100 times the bacterial biomass of grassland while st=
ill maintaining the ratio.
remember it is the ratio that is of the most importance.

Doc, you wrote< But bacterial biomass is highest of any ecosystem in
these old growth forests. It's just that fungal biomass is much, much
higher. > This doesn't make sense. Did you mean the bacterial NUMBERS
are higher but the biomass of fungi is higher?
Another question: In tropical forests the numbers of ants is like
nothing I have ever seen. How do their biomass numbers compare in that
situation....if you know, sorry!
