You can get a used vacuum for about $15 the smaller the better. Get a used =
one at your local Goodwill Store or look in the newspaper for used vacuums.=
Just make sure the air hose can hook onto the exhaust to become a blower. =
I took an old shop vacuum and found all the hardware I needed in the PVC se=
ction of Home Depot to hook it to 1/2" PVC. It puts out too much air so I b=
leed off most of the air to get the results I want.

Subject: [compost_tea] Sorry, yet another air pump question...
I'm sorry if this seems to be an old question, but I wonder if
someone would give me a "sanity" check on a small air pump
I'm
thinking of buying for 1- to 5-gallon batches of tea.
I will be putting in worm compost, humics, molasses, seaweed
(Maxicrop), and other materials (bacterial and fungal foods) in
various combinations depending on bacterial or fungal properties
I'm
trying for. So far I've been running a really tiny 20-gallon
aquarium pump and its output is really pathetic. (I've gotten good
results, but that was in a 1-gallon jug that was half filled.)
I found a pump that is generally used for hydroponics and puts out
22 liters / minute. (I think that is close to 1 CFM, but correct me
if I'm wrong). The price is around $60.
If you know of something better, please let me know.
Here is a link to the pump at one of many vendors:
http://www.altgarden.com/site/pumps/htmldocs/dualair.html
I use a variety of bubblers (I'm still experimenting) and the 22
liters / minute figure (on the label I looked at in person) is with
a pretty good back pressure. The link shows it putting out 475 GPH.
The little pump has allowed me to brew up some pretty "tasty" blends
that had good foam, good results, but I had to keep the nutrients
down to keep from running out of 02.
I don't intend on brewing in anything bigger than a 5-gallon
container and generally just brew inside a 1-gallon distilled water
jug.
Thanks in advance for helping a novice.
If someone thinks I could get by with a cheaper model and not worry
about 02 levels, I'd appreciated it.
