Notes on powdery mildew

T-22 (trichoderma) works very well in tea and it's use has been
widely documented for some time! T-22 as 'Topshield" is labeled
for
powdery mildew control.
Potassium bicarbonate is a recently registered material ('Armicarb-
100','Kaligreen') for prevention of powdery mildew and other diseases
on crops like cucurbits, and ornamentals. Just like more conventional
fungicides, it must be applied to healthy tissue in advance of
infection in order to be effective.

"Another Good Mite?
Greg English-Loeb, Cornell Entomologist, is involved in a massive
mite relocation program.
He's been removing the Orthotydeus lambi mites from their home on the
riverbank grape Vitis riparia, rearing large colonies of them, and
trying to convince them to set up housekeeping on commercial vinifera
vines.
He's not as interested in giving the O. lambi mites a new home as he
is in controlling fungal disease. The O. lambi, of the tydeid family,
eats fungal spores like those that cause powdery mildew.
The first experiments on potted V. riparia vines were encouraging, he
said. Vines with the mites developed less powdery mildew than mite-
free control vines, suggesting that the tydeid mites may be able to
provide bio-control of powdery mildew if they would colonize
commercial vines.

Horti Oil. Eco Carb® is an activated potassium bicarbonate with a
very good leaf activating agent.

Researchers at Cornell University in the USA tried over 300 leaf
activators with potassium bicarbonate and selected one which was
considered to give consistently superior efficacy against mildews and
Botrytis. Synertrol Horti Oil has been found in replicated trials to
control powdery mildew and Botrytis in its early stages.

The other area of powdery mildew control is the plant health aspect.
Products containing marine algae have been widely researched to
stimulate the plant's own immune system.

There is a great deal of research around the world looking at the
ways plants protect themselves. The aim of the research is to isolate
these naturally occurring chemicals, synthesise them and apply them
to crops to artificially induce Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR).

Geneticists are currently looking at ways to enhance the levels of
cytokinins in plants to enhance SAR. Cytokinins are found naturally
in high concentrations in marine algae and this is one of the reasons
why growers see significant improvements in plant health when they
use products like Acadian® on a regular basis.

Aminogro® is another product which contains amino acids and other
naturally occurring chemicals that have known to induce immune
responses in plants."

Bio-Stimulants: Research on seaweed extracts, reported in H.D.R.A.
News 144, has shown them to help plants fight off fungal attack, on
fruit in particular. Seaweed does not have a fungicidal action,
rather it strengthens and stimulates the plant. Seaweed is now used
commercially in vineyards around the world.
Other methods: Research at HDRA has shown that sodium bicarbonate can
be helpful in controlling powdery mildew. Best results were obtained
using between 2g and 10g per litre of water, mixed with 10g per litre
of soft soap (which acts as a wetting agent). Higher concentrations
of sodium bicarbonate (up to 20g per litre) were tried, with even
better results, but this caused scorching to young leaves. Urine,
diluted 1:2 or 1:4, has been found effective by H.D.R.A members. This
has been reported in previous issues of H.D.R.A. News (93:16-17,
102:Sup. iv).

mildew control in grapes
"Canadian researchers have demonstrated an effective control of
powdery mildew in the green houses by a fungal antagonist,
Stephanoascus flocculosa. The fungus, Ampelomyces quisqualis is a
hyperparasite of powdery mildews. A. quisqualis infects the powdery
mildew hyphae, forms its reproductive structures (the fruiting bodies
known as pycnidia) within the hyphae, conidiophores, and fruiting
bodies of the powdery mildew. A. quisqualis eventually reduces the
growth of powdery mildew and kills it. Ecogen Corporation markets a
formulated powder containing A. quisqualis under the trade name AQ
10."
