The influence of the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus
clarum, on the development of cowpea root rot caused by Rhizoctonia
solani tinder greenhouse conditions was determined. Cow,pea root
necrosis and the number of sclerotia in the rhizosphere produced by
the pathogen were significantly reduced by the inoculated AM fungus.
However, the pathogen slightly reduced the mycorrhizal root
colonization. Growth parameters of cowpea plants, namely, leaf area,
number of leaves, shoot height, shoot dry weight, pigment content and
relative water content were generally stimulated by the AM fungus,
while these parameters were suppressed by the pathogen in the non-
mycorrhizal plants. When challenged with R. solani, the mycorrhizal
plants contained notably higher concentrations of P, N, K, and Mg
when compared with the non-mycorrhizal plants. The data suggest that:
1). the ability of mycorrhizal routs to absorb phosphorus and other
nutrients, 2) the imperative competition For infection sites and the
antagonistic reactions between the mycorrhizal fungus and the
pathogen, may be the reasons for increasing disease resistance in the
mycorrhizal plants. Thus, the AIM fungus acts to some extent as a
biological control agent against R. solani, the causal agent for the
root rot disease in cowpea plants.
