In the Korean Natural Farming which Gil Carandang shared with us and
also with Steve Diver, we use forest litter to extract microorganisms
and we use this in the brew that we make.

It has been mentioned before as an innoculant;  but of course if you
take
very much it deprives the forest of its livelihood and ecology suffers.
I take it the if there is a lot of litter, it won't miss the odd
handful...
