Re: Consider the Potato



Just a brief comment - 

Last year we got an "allottment plot", 3/10 acre plus, in the inner 
industrial bit of our city (Bradford UK) - we're growing organically, 
and within a year of getting the plot we're just about self 
sufficient, and our staple diet is now the glorious spud.  I'm having 
to change my cooking habits (staple used to be rice/pasta/noodles), 
but am now really excited about the possibilities with our 2 
wardrobes full of potatoes (no root cellar but stored in a cold attic 
in recycled fruit boxes).  

Some of Bill Duesing's commments were really useful and encouraging - 
it's great to know there are others doing similar things.  Luckily we 
aren't overrun with Colarado Beetle over here so it's not a problem.  
I think a reasonable crop rotation tends to prevent blight, but won't 
cure it if it gets established, we  use certified blight free seed 
potatoes from an organic supplier.
