The Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre presents it's 3rd annual
Introduction to Permaculture:
A three day skills intensive workshop
October 6-8, 2001
Permaculture is a way of designing and developing "sustainable human
habitat". It is inspired and informed by the way that natural ecosystems
function. By applying ecological design principals and locally appropriate
techniques to their surroundings, people can create abundant and
self-reliant environments in which land, water, plants, people, animals,
shelter, appropriate technologies, and community are thoughtfully
integrated.
This workshop will have a strong hands-on component and will include the
following topics:
soil stewardship ( zero tillage, sheet mulching, worm composting etc...)
rain harvesting, ponds, and water conservation
edible landscaping (forest gardening, urban vertical techniques)
basic site analysis and overlay mapping
multifunctional plants
animal systems
natural building
pattern understanding and edge effect
space-intensive, year round organic veggie gardening (rotation, companion
planting etc...)
attracting beneficial insects
creating and utilizing microclimates
mushroom cultivation
permaculture philosophy
community strategies (LETS, Co-op housing, CSA, food parks etc...)
lots of local examples
...and more!
Instructor: Geoff Johnson
Geoff graduated from Linnaea farm's 8 month ecological gardening and
permaculture design course in 1995 and has focussed on permaculture activism
and study ever since, working for organizations such as Environmental Youth
Alliance, LifeCycles, and the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre. He
has worked on permaculture projects in Australia, the Indian Himalayas, and
is now working on the Spring Ridge Commons greenspace creation project. His
focus is on edible landscaping in the city.
Course fee: $125 (a limited number of scholarships will be available for
folks who need them)
Registration deadline: Sept. 29
