Ralph Long - permaculture pioneer, collegue and friend

Ralph Long, a permaculture pioneer, passed away last Tuesday at his home in
Mittagong on the NSW Southern Highlands.

Ralph joined the permaculture endeavour in its early years and played an
influential but low profile role.

He was active running stalls - book and seed sales - and organising
Permaculture Southern Highlands courses and events.

One of his early achievements was the invention of the Long Clinometer, a
device which enabled a tractor to be steered along a contour for purposes
such as contour planting and swale excavation.

More recently, Ralph designed a number of rural permaculture properties and
commercial organic farms on the Southern Highlands.

He was involved in the design of the August EcoForest mixed commercial
forestry plantation planned for the Hunter Valley and was a director of that
company.

Always in good humour despite illness in recent years, Ralph will be
remembered for his easy going nature and for having time for everyone.

Ralph's funeral will take place at 1pm, Thursday July 7 at Bowral
Presbyterian Church in his home territory on the Southern Highlands.

Ralph leaves a track record of earthcare and peoplecare.

It's time to say farewell and thank you to a good friend of the earth and
the diversity of species which inhabit it.
