The History of India and the British Raj

In 1599 Queen Elizabeth I granted a Royal Charter to an association named “Governor and Company of Merchants of London trading with the East Indies.” This association, later known as the East India Company, included a group of merchants wishing to trade with India.

The company initially devoted to trade but eventually resorted to increasing military measures which culminated in its dissolution after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. This marked the creation of the British Indian Empire, or British Raj, until 1948.

The British Raj collection contains significant works of history written in the 19th Century by mostly British authors, and from the British point of view. These histories cover India and its parts from the earliest times, and the 350-year period that followed the formation of the East India Company.
