Well, I made my trip to North Carolina with high hopes for seeing a
Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Unfortunately, I was not to be.
First off, thanks to everyone who gave me the suggestion regarding Weymouth
Woods and the RCW’s. Unfortunately, I never got their. This being a family
vacation and all, plans changed with the nice weather on Saturday 11/9 and
we were off to the beach. We ended up at Wrightsville Beach where the kids
played and I set up my scope and watched the birds for a few hours. Here’s
what I saw—not too bad. I enjoyed myself and added 2 lifers, Great Cormorant
and Northern Gannet.
Red-throated Loon Several feeding off beach
Common Loon Several feeding
Pied-billed Grebe 1
Northern Gannet Several groups of adults and juveniles flying southward
Brown Pelican Abundant
Great Cormorant One I was certain of
Tricolored Heron One in marsh slightly inland
Sanderling 1 flyby
Bonaparte's Gull Abundant
Ring-billed Gull Very abundant
Great Black-backed Gull 1
Rock Dove Several slightly inland
Northern Mockingbird One singing loudly as I go out of my car
European Starling Several
Common Grackle One small flock
Boat-tailed Grackle 1
Grace & peace,
Chris Moellering
